Autumn Term

Welcome to Wickford Junior School! We hope you have a very enjoyable year making new friends and learning new things.

In maths, National Curriculum 14 is followed, incorporating place value, mental addition and subtraction strategies and multiplication skills.   Our literacy this term includes reading and writing stories with familiar settings, play scripts and senses poetry.

The children start the year off by learning about their local area, incorporating our school and the area surrounding it, this includes using digital maps to find local landmarks and their homes. In science our topic is light and we make shadow puppets in DT to link with the topic. We are learn about Judaism and visit the synagogue in Westcliff just before half term to enhance the children’s learning. After half term, our topic is “Ancient Egypt” and we learn about how the Ancient Egyptians lived. This cross-curricular topic also includes RE (in which we continue to learn about Judaism) and art where we make prints using the relief technique. Wherever possible, there are also links made to the work the children are doing in literacy and maths. We arrange for a visitor to come into school during the term to support this area of the curriculum, and details regarding this day are sent out close to the time.

Our PSHE centres on relationships and keeping safe. In ICT, we reinforce the basic use of a computer, including word processing skills and the children are introduced to our learning platform ‘My Learning’. This also includes sessions on e-safety. The children start learning French with Mr Rhys-Morgan, beginning with greetings. In PE the children develop skills in athletics and catching & throwing, including the passing and receiving of balls and scoring. Swimming starts after half term.

During the first half term, the first set of ‘Keep on Reading’ books is sent out. Further details about this scheme are sent out near the time.

As always, if you require any further details about any of these activities or about your child’s progress, please make an appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher via the school office.  If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate contact any of the Year 3 team.

These might be a good Christmas present to help children learn their times tables:

Spring Term

The children have returned well-rested from their break and have settled quickly back into school routines. This week we will be taking a few days off timetable so we can become geologists to complete a short unit on rocks and soils. We will be following this up by looking at rocks used in sculpture in art lessons.

Science and PSHE will be taught through our first topic this term, which is called ‘Our Bodies’. We will be learning about nutrition, medicines and drugs and how to keep our bodies healthy. In geography we will be looking at countries, counties and cities of the UK and looking back in history to life in Stone Age Britain. We are organising a trip to Barleylands Farm to enrich the children’s learning about the Stone Age. In RE we will be looking at how the Christian bible is made up and at some of the stories it contains. Our PE lessons will focus on balances and travelling with the class teacher; games with Mr Harrington; and swimming in the second half of the term.

In literacy we will be looking at the work of Julia Donaldson as a significant author and learning about letter writing. We will also be looking at the features of instruction texts.

In maths we will be furthering our knowledge of place value, fractions and shape, before moving on to measures and written methods for addition and subtraction.

As always, we are happy to answer any questions you might have about our curriculum. If you have any questions or would like to help in class in some way, please contact your child’s teacher.

Summer Term

Summer Term

Our topic for the term is  ‘The Romans’ and covers a range of different subjects. In the first part of the term we look at the growth of the Roman Empire and in the second part of the term we look at the Roman Invasion of Britain. We visit Colchester Castle to give the children the opportunity to investigate how the Romans influenced life in our area and to support the children’s learning about life in Roman times. In literacy we will be looking at and writing adventure stories and then we will be reading and writing our own Roman Myths. After half term we will be writing reports about life and key events during Roman times. In art we will be making Roman mosaics.

In PSHE the children will be learning about their feelings and how these change as they grow older and during the second half of the term they will be taught about animals and their babies and about family trees. This term in science the children will start by learning about magnets and forces and then about plants and how they grow. In PE the children will be developing their athletic skills and then to finish off the year we will be playing striking and fielding games including rounders.

In maths we will be following the new curriculum incorporating number sense, geometric reasoning and multiplication skills
